If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck then it must be a .......?

The husband and I were enjoying a spring ride along a ditch bank trail when out of the blue a pair of ducks flew from the water into the sky right above our heads. They startled the horses a bit but as I watched them fly away It dawned on me, I didn't know the names of a male and female duck. My first thought was the male is called a Mallard but that's a type of duck.

The more I thought about it, the more I became obsessed, I mean I feel like I should know this.

Ask me just about any other animal and I could tell you what the gender specific names are. It's stupid trivia but it's what I know.

I can see myself on Jeopardy slamming the button down, "What is a gander." What is a doe." "What is a Jenny." I'm killing the opponent and raking in the money, until final Jeopardy.  I balk, I have no idea what a male duck is called let alone the female. The music is playing the familiar Jeopardy tune, time is ticking away and I'm not getting it.

Where's that Ken Jennings when you need him.

A few days later we are out riding along the same trail when another pair of ducks flew over head. The husband, remembering my dilemma pipes up and says:

"I know what you call a male and female duck."

I look at him with enthusiasm and asked, "What?"

"Donald and Daisy." he answered with a smile.

HA!

You know For a split second, I almost believed him...Then I got it...

Don't say it, I know I'm slow...

I've never really done any horseback riding, but I'd certainly love to give it a try. What a great way to spend a Spring day with your husband--especially when he comes up with witticisms like that. :)

Ha ha, cute story.

You know how I feel about horses but it makes me happy that you get to spend good times being with your husband doing something that you love.

Have a good week!

Good thing you posted in your comment about the names.. or I would have been googling about it too. I don't know why I love trivia stuff.. but I do!

I think your husbands answer is awesome.
I'm going to have to share with my kiddos next time we see ducks..

Your husband is brilliant. You guys are so blessed to have such a fun activity to spend together doing. Riding horses is so peaceful, so 'get in touch with nature'. I can just hear the creaking of the leather on the saddles, the breathing of the horses and their nickering (sp?) and the clip clop of their hooves. Enjoying nature and good company...it doesn't get any better than that.

Oh, I know how you feel--what are they called? Should we just stick to Daisy and Donald? I would love to be out riding. wow.

I died laughing at that one - how creative of him

Brilliant - that was just too perfect!

That's funny.
I think you can tell the difference by their eyelashes or something.

I've never thought about the sex of ducks. I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't be obsessed about it.

I think they would be a drake and a hen but I like his names better! LOL ;D

LOL... Very funny on his part.

well my dear. Anyone who watches National Geographic KNOWS it is Donald and Daisy.
Just like a mouse male is Mickey and the female is Minnie.

Do you own horses??
Mr Ed. and Edwina???

Donald and Daisy is much more universally understood than Hen and Drake... I'm all for it!

A Drake! Oh, what a funny story! When I was younger, I wanted to have a baby boy and name him Drake, totally fogetting that sometimes husbands care what you name their sons. The whole time I was reading your funny story, I was thinking, "I KNOW this one! What is it again?" Lol. But I had no idea that female chickens and female ducks share the same name. Weird.

I don't know the proper names either. I'm not quite so sure about the majority of animals though!

My husbands cousin bought two ducklings and when I asked their names she said, "Christmas and Easter." I don't think she cared what you call them - as long as you call them for dinner.

You know, I have never ridden a horse. I'd really like to. There used to be horses in the field near my house growing up and once, when I was about six, this big, brown horse gave me the eye when I was trying to give him an apple. Seriously, he gave me the stink eye. Like he wanted to eat my brains and stomp on me. So I was wary after that of any activity that could conceivably put me at the mercy of a horse. Nowadays, I'd like to give it a shot. I'm sure I'd look insane on a horse though. More insane than normal even!

Lol! Too funny! But what are they? I totally thought mallard too when I first started reading your post.
