A natural high

Not the kind you get when going to the dentist because there's nothing natural about going to the dentist...although the Nitro...now that takes the edge off things. Love that stuff.

Nitro is all well and good, but what I'm talking about is a NATURAL high. For instance, an athletes body will release endorphins as they work out, making them want to continue the exercise as they push their body through extreme pain.

Never could relate.

Don't get me wrong, I have Zumba and Yoga, just not the endorphins giving me the extra push, especially in Yoga. If there's ever a need for my body to experience pure happiness, elation, inner harmony and boundless energy it would be in Yoga, but notta, zip, nothing. Those so called endorphins are not kicking in.

I've tried running, nothing.

Exercise videos, nothing.

Working out in a gym, nothing.

I've even tried climbing a mountain. You would think something would kick in since my body suffered more pain and agony than humanly possible, with the exception of the husband. Having me trudge behind him I think his pain and suffering trumped mine.

Yep, there is nothing about exercise that gives me the endorphin high.

I was beginning to think I'm some sort of human defect who didn't come complete with the ability to feel the brains cocktail of chemicals which produces the natural drug called endorphins.

Then strangely enough, I found them.  Apparently it's not subject to just running, or working out. Believe it or not, studies show  people who relax in a float tank experienced the production of endorphins.

Go figure.

It's not where mine came from. I don't need a float tank to relax.

My high kicks in when I ride my horse. Funny huh?

It's true. Although I like to do many things, I love to ride horses. I love their smell, their movement and their beauty.  I've always felt pure pleasure when I'm around horses, just never thought about why.

Now I know, they release the endorphins in me. Which could explain why the husband took up horseback riding.

Smart man.

Great post! I love horses, too, and can completely understand why you get your high from them.

I love it!! Any by the way, you look so relaxed sitting on top of the beautiful horse, that I could almost feel the endorphins! I think that sometimes the biggest "high", is when we just stop and smell the roses - kudos to you for figuring that out for us!!

Hugs,
Barb

Ah Siami, you and your horse make a great pair.
I'm glad that you've discovered the chemistry of being with your horse giving you a high in more ways than one. He's a beautiful horse. Have a great week with your beautiful horse. JB

YOur horse is beautiful - Lucky you!!

I always thought I was defective because I never got that endorphin high that people always talk about when they exercise. For me it is parties - throwing parties - Ha ha!

I agree with Cherie, your horse is beautiful. I think it's cool that riding horses is how you get your endorphin high. At least you are doing something you love. I would get that endorphin high exercising; but I hated it the whole time. I need to kick it up a notch and find a new hobby that will give my brain that natural high you were talking about.

Oh that horse smell, how I miss it. I haven't had a horse for close to 30 years and I can still smell it. I love the crinkle/crackle of the saddle, the rhythm of the stride and the feeling of freedom while riding. I think I feel those endorphines releasing as I type just thinking about horses.

Don't feel bad, I have NEVER had an endorphine high from exercising either.

That is awesome!!!!
You just must be resistant to all forms of endorphins until you get the horsey kind. Good for you for working at it till you found it and GOOD for your husband for helping you get there.

Now enjoy the HIGH!

Guess we have to find our Endorphin Kick wherever we can eh.
Love the photo of you on your horse. I love riding, but am kind of nervous on my horses as they are kind green. So a little frisky.
I have this DREAD of falling off.
Hubby loves to ride, so I better put my big girl panties on and keep up.

Awesome! I don't really get the high when I exercise, either. Maybe I should try horses. :)

That's kind of funny but totally interesting too. I don't get endorphins from working out- but when I ran in the 5K definitely experienced them

I can see those endorphins all over your grin in that picture :) There is really so much more to the relationship than just climbing aboard a mode of transportation... horses give us that social and emotional high that runner probably don't get from the pavement!
