Hitting the wall

When we use the term 'Hitting the wall' we use it figuratively not literally, well sometimes it's literal. Like when we're walking with the preschoolers down the hall and someone gets distracted by not watching where their going, they can in fact hit a wall, or a door, or what ever is in their path. But really we say it when a youngster is just plum wore out, has nothing left to give and enters...the zone.

We have  a youngster who falls into that category. One who still requires a nap and cannot make it the two and a half hours we offer. He gets this glazed look across his face, the rim of his eyes turn red and he is just flat out done with the day.

He's our little guy who has a Cochlear implant, suffers from Cerebral Palsy and has a shunt on one side of his head. Despite his disability he's very bright and can hold his own in almost any situation........until 2 o'clock when his young three year old body decides game over, it's nap time.

The first time we experienced  our little man 'hitting the wall'  we wrote his mama a note in his journal, which is sent back and forth daily, telling her what a great day he had up until he, 'hit the wall.'

His poor mom was frantic when she read that her son had 'hit a wall' she didn't waste a single moment calling us up, "What, he hit a wall, what do you mean he hit a wall?"

Her concern was valid as his balance is awkward and he does fall on an occasion, but after explaining to her it's just an expression used when he's done, tired, wore out and ready to go home, we all shared a pretty good laugh.

Our English idioms really do make some things difficult!

I'm sure the mother was very relieved to hear your explanation, hahaha.
I'm on antibiotic and it usually doesn't bother me but I find that this time it makes me tired and this morning I hit the wall at work, lol... but thanks goodness I was just about ready to go home. I was so exhausted.
Thanks for sharing this funny moment with us. I so enjoy it.
Hugs,
JB

I bet he is the most precious!
I think we all his the wall, we just don't realize it like this little guy.
In fact, I think the whole country could use a nap.
Pretty sure we'd all be a bit nicer and more reasonable.

Sometimes we all hit the wall. Glad it wasn't literally true in this little guys case. He is lucky to have you!

When I first read the title I really thought that he had hit the wall. Glad he didn't really hit the wall and that he has an amazing teacher like you.

I can tell when it is 3pm on the dot every single day. I hit my own personal wall and I get grumpy for a minute. Tired, thirsty, and hungry..

I tend to "hit the wall" much faster when using my CI. My brain is SO used to silence and all this quiet... and with the CI, you pick up EVERYTHING. EVERY LITTLE THING. Rustling papers. Toilet flushing in the other room. The birds outside the window. Kids yelling and hollering. Paper rustling, again. A dropped pen. Overlapping voices constantly... there is no end to it. And my brain doesn't know how to pick up on what noise was what... and the brain is VERY busy for the duration of me wearing it. I get dizzy and so tired, literally WIPED Out after a few hours myself. When I can finally peel the magnet off my head, it is utter relief. Your little boy, though, is so young and he has a lot of time to get used to it. I hope he does! :)

That little boys sounds precious. Sometimes we just can't do any more!

How ironic, since it's usually us deaf people who have trouble deciphering idioms! :)

I find Furry Bottoms comment to be especially insightful. I wouldn't have thought of the problems that having a CI would create after being used to the silence. I bet her explanation helps you to understand the little guy. Take care.
