I'm so excited to go camping Grandma!
Me too, I replied.
After being patient with the husband and I with the last minute preparations, we were finally ready to head out.
The husband loaded his bike, I loaded the boys and away we went. The boys were thrilled. No sooner did we hit the road, they were snoozing in their carseats.
Two hours later their little voices in the back were asking if we were there yet. I was kinda asking myself the same question.
We arrived in the town of our destination so I told the boys as soon as grandpa finds a place to park the trailer we will be there.
One of the twins was looking out the window at the beautiful lake and RV parking.
Theres a place grandma.
Yes, I see that.
But the husband kept on driving.
Awhile later he piped up again.
There's a place grandma.
He's right, there were many places along the lake with beautiful RV parks, playgrounds, manicured grass and paved bike paths, but the husband kept on driving.
Soon those RV parks were a small glimpse in the rearview mirror as we drove away.
We drove up, up, up a windy road going into no mans land. No lake, just trees, lots of trees. Finally we came to a clearing.
An area just a quarter of a mile short of a ski resort I noticed camp trailers circled about. No manicured grass, paved bike paths or even trailer hookups. Only a mowed field with a handful of trailers.
The real clearing came when I realized all the campers had bikes attached to their vehicles.
It's not uncommon for the husband to bring his bike when we go places but this place was different. When he finally fessed up after much probing and prodding he informed me he entered himself in a mountain bike race.
A 60 mile mountain bike race that would take him at least 5 hours to complete, if he's lucky.
My thoughts turned to the excited boys who were begging to get out of their carseats.
What was I going to do with them with nothing available but get stickers stuck in your socks.
Well the boys proved we didn't need all the comfy amenities of an RV park.
We were camping and we had the great outdoors to explore, so we did.
There was a steep hill behind our camper that the boys and I ran up and down, up and down, up and down, over and over many times during the day.
We ate.
Walked to the ski resort and hiked some trails. Even encountered a racer and had to get out of his way.
Some how the time went fast and the husband was back before we knew it.
They were super excited to go to sleep. Not so much the sleeping part but snuggling in their sleeping bags on the fold out couch.
Their first camping trip was a success. It may not have been what I expected it to be but they taught me you can be a happy camper if you have the right attitude.
And happy it was.
Even Oskar had a great time

So adorable. You were brave to take them and kind to forgive the hubby for abandoning you.
It looks like you survived like a champ.
Those little guys will remember that forever.
I'm glad your camping trip turned out fantastic for the boy and you as well.
They look so happy. Leave it to the husband to not tell you it was a bikers' camping park. It sounds like something my husband would do if he biked. lol.

So glad that you had a great time. To bad after the ride race that you didn't go down to one of the camp sites by the Lake. Next time.
