The Stowaways

The thing about returning from a camping trip is feeling rejuvenated, relaxed and ready to start each day with a fresh approach, until you have to clean the trailer, strip the bed, wash the laundry, empty the refrigerator and put any remaining food back in the house.

I've pretty much have it down to a science once I get motivated to tackle it.

When we arrived home from our recent Labor Day trip on Tuesday, it was late and dark so I decided Wednesday afternoon would be a good time take it on.

My first order of business was to start with the refrigerator then move to the food cabinets.

That's when I found the mouse droppings.

Some little bugger got into the drawer with the protein bars and decided to help himself.

I can't stand mice.

This little stowaway pooped in the silverware drawer, dish towel drawer, pots and pan drawer, behind the drawers and under the sink and behind the pipes.

I was so grossed out the trailer got a cleaning like never before. Everything was tripled washed and sanitized.

The husband quickly went to the store and picked up some traps. The kind where you put the peanut butter inside a disk shaped trap. Once the mouse goes inside the trapdoor locks him in.

We waited until the next day.

With baited breath I checked the traps and no mouse. As a matter of fact, he was all over the place leaving more poop in his wake, he was even so bold to poop on top of the trap!

This time the husband brought in the big guns, the old fashion snap trap.
He set 5.

The following day he found 3 traps missing the peanut butter without being released but the greedy little mouse found his fate in the fourth trap.

A sense of relief came over me, the battle was won.

Although the husband wasn't as convinced. With all the droppings around he was sure there was more than one mouse and just to make sure, he set the remaining 4 traps.

He was right and I do admit it.

He caught another stowaway but not before noticing, once again, one of the traps was missing the peanut butter without being released.

They were clever little buggers, I'll give them that much.

We waited one more day with the remaining traps and I'm pleased to report we got a handle on the pest control.

The trailer will once again get cleaned and sanitized and cleaned again.

I'm also going to rethink about taking our cat out of retirement and have her start camping with us again.

That’s a lot of work for you but I know you were determined!! Our camper/cabin sits in the country and you know there are all sorts of critters around! Thankfully, the camper is pretty air tight....unlike our city home where I have doors that don’t close and all sorts of openings! Louis Dean says we have an open door policy!

Oh my grossness. :( I'm glad you captured the pooping culprits. Yes, the cat would have been happy to help you I'm sure!

OH my.. all that work to clean and now clean again. they are cute little guys. once we had one in our front bedroom, 30 years and never saw a mouse and there he was.. bob was able to catch him and let him go.. to cute to kill, but every now and then a rat gets in the garage, in FL there are giant tree rats from palm trees. if it rains to much they run for the garage, those big rats are killed imediatley..we have big traps that look like claws... they were to smart to get caught by the ones like you show here.. we use pices of slim jims as bait. they can't resist.

I was told that mice always travel in pairs so they can set up house in your house. To catch a mouse, you have to think like a mouse. They usually travel along a wall. I hate those little buggers. Good for your husband for winning the husband and mouse game.

Yes, your kitty would surely LOVE TO get to hunt down those varmits! LOL ha ha. Do y'all get Fall there?--and Fallish weather?

Oh no! What a mess to find all that. Maybe it is a good idea to bring the cat next time!

Hi!

That is truly the worse part about camping...the cleaning!! We used to to Steelhead fishing on the Salmon river, sometimes for 20 days. Those little buggers would always find a way in! They are smart...I don't know how they get the peanut butter and not get caught! You must have the same family of mice at your house as we have!

Hugs and Love,
Barb
