She's potty trained and not even three!

It's interesting having a baby around, especially a gigantic one.

I can do human babies but horses are a whole different ball game.

Dixie came with a clean slate, knowing nothing.

Although she does follows us everywhere, wants to be in our space and seeks attention  continually.

Sounds like a typical two year old who is jealous when the other horses are getting attention.

She's good with having a halter on and being led around but she needed work with her feet. She did not like having her legs touched or her hooves cleaned out.

Grooming horses and keeping them as tidy as possible is one of my favorite things to do, next to riding. Dixie had no choice but to succumb to the enviable.

To say the least we over came that hurdle.

We also stay up on scooping poop around the dry lots, with three horses there tends to be a ton of manure.

With that being said, the older two are good about backing up and dropping their load within the proximity of the pile.
Dixie on the other hand, took it upon herself to use their lofting shed as her personal outhouse. The shed where they bed down at night.

Over time it was evident she was making a habit of this behavior instead of following the example of the wiser.

The husband was quite frustrated with this baby girl, not only was she making a mess of the shed but wasting shavings as a result.

So, he decided to potty train her.

He strung yellow caution tape to block the entrance. A deterrence he hoped would keep her out during the day.

This didn't disrupt horses routine as they typically don't use the shed in the day unless its mid summer and blazing hot or pouring down rain.

The weather we've been having lately, crazy as it may seem for January/February, has been like spring. Sunshine with the temperatures in the mid 40's to 50's.

At night the husband would remove the tape so the horses can tuck themselves in.

The one who loves her bed the most is Jaycee my Tennessee Walker. She truly burrows in as the shavings on her back and side is a absolute indication she loves her bed.  Some mornings she's completely covered which brings a smile to my face. I can appreciate a girl who snuggles in.

The husbands plan has been working. The last few days he took the tape away and to our surprise there hasn't been any poop.
Even more miraculous she hasn't defiled the shavings at night either. I believe this little filly has finally caught on and if I dare to be bold......
I think the husband has successfully potty trained my baby girl.

Standing Ovation for HUBBY... training a baby that big, is well...OH MY! incredible...this story reminded me of the year we moved in this house and bob decided to spread manure we purchased, around all the plants in the back yard. Max our mixed PIT loved it. he loved it so much he rolled in it and got all stinky. yet still after that, hubby decided to put his fish cleanings around the azalea. a few days later, Max had UCK smelly UCK all over him. after that we put nothing smelly around the plants

Hi Saimi~

Wow...she is just beautiful!! Bob trained horses for many years, and a smart horse will learn quickly...she must be very smart! I did get a chuckle about the potty training, very smart on your part, I hope it keeps working. Bob was just telling me that he needed to clean out the shed this spring...the horses we have here obviously need to be potty trained ;0)

It has been so cold and snowy here...today it is around 35 degrees, but suppose to get cold again on Sunday. I'm really ready for spring, but know that we need the snow to fill the reservoirs.

Have fun with that sweet girl!!

Hugs and Love,
Barb

I had no idea that you could get horses to poop in a certain area; brilliant. I'm with Jaycee-I love to snuggle in at night too.
Your horses are so lucky to have such good humans to love and train them.
