It starts with Ibuprofen, at least three. This helps to calm the muscles before they have a chance to catch fire and I'm talking burning. Then the music starts up, wild, crazy and fast. The room full of woman take their places and begin dancing and moving in sync. Except me. I'm moving and dancing but the steps are so fast I can't seem to coordinate my arms and feet at the same time, but I'm loving it. Although I'm flailing about, I feel so wild and free like a jungle native dancing around a bon fire shaking it for all it's worth. I envision myself with long dark hair, scantly dressed swinging to the beat of the drums. It's exhilarating. It's sensual. It's aerobic. It's Zumba. Mondays and Wednesdays.
Tuesday and Thursday is the exact opposite, except for the burning sensation in the muscle department. Things slow down to a snails pace holding each pose longer than my poor arms and legs can tolerate. The music is soothing, the movements are methodical but the workout is insane...It's called Yoga.
The thing with yoga, I have this tendency to laugh or talk to take my mind off the intensity. Like when we're holding a pose and our hands are reaching for the sky in a 'prayer position' I'm praying I don't tip over. Or I'll say something to the gal next to me causing her to giggle. Her reply, "Gee Saimi nobody talked in class before you came, we just suffered in silence."
What can I say, I'm a team player.
The instructor wearing a 'Boot Camp' tee shirt joined in the fun and said, "If you're talking you're not working, I'm embarrassed for you."
Once again I try to compose myself but I just cant seem to suffer in silence. Another exercise involves lying on our backs with arms and legs stretched out. We'll lift a leg and reach with our opposite arm crunching our stomachs. Boot camp instructor instructs, "Uuuuuup, and down....uuuuuuuup and down." I begin to focus on how he's says 'up' and again I start laughing to myself, then taking it a step further, I mimic him.
Boot Camp instructor hears me and asks if I'm mocking him....I can't help but laugh harder. Next exercise involves pairing up. What happens when two girls get together? You got it, more chatting and visiting...Boot camp instructor says, "We're here to make muscle, not friends." I remind him woman can multitask.
Each day is an amazing workout and I can honestly say I've never had so much fun exercising. The girls come from all over the school district making it feel like it's one big employee reunion. We meet at one of the elementary schools and the classes are taught by YMCA instructors.
I always feel tired after a day of preschool but since I started exercising I seem to have more energy....Funny how that works.

You are hilarious! I can really picture the scene in my head as you are describing it! Does my mom go to the Yoga or Zumba class with you? I took her to a Zumba class when she was here in Provo. She lasted for about 30 min and was done, it can get pretty intense! I tried Yoga once thinking it was going to be easy and I'd probably have to go do some cardia afterward to really feel like I got a work out but let me tell ya, I was dripping sweat. Boy, did I get schooled that day! Sounds like the Boot Camp Person could use a "Chill Pill!"
That sounds like a good balance of classes. I'm looking for new ways to be active since my crappy car can't take me out to the trails in bad driving. I like the idea of something wild and active one day followed by yoga the next.
Methinks a fun ballet class would be the perfect combo for ya :)
I totally wish I could Zumba with ya!
I'm so glad you're having fun! I'm like you in yoga. The instructor will say, "Now we'll try to hold the crow position for three breaths" and I say, "Oh I don't think so!" yeah, I'm not the most popular girl in the class, but at least I amuse myself.
Now Zumba, I'd love to find a class and try that! Everybody keeps raving about it!
You are so funny! I could so see myself giggling with you. I want to laugh out loud every time I hear my son's Gymboree teacher sing, "Bubble catchers AAAAAAAAAAWAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY, bubble catchers AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYY". They have these little plastic clappy things that they are supposed to catch the bubbles with... She sings about it like she's in an Italian opera and I can barely contain myself. You would laugh, too! I just know you would! You would probably imitate her and get us kicked out of Gymboree!
I've never tried yoga. I always felt like I needed more intense workouts but it sounds pretty intense, the way you describe it. I wonder about this "hot yoga," where people do yoga in a sauna-like environment. I think I'd pass out!
If I were doing all those exercises I would want you to be in the same class as me...humor and laughing is a must in my book. Loved this post. Glad you are enjoying the exercises and having fun. Hugs
Wow, you're energetic! I would love to try Zumba... I do a boxercise class once a week but it's not very elegant (the pain is pretty bad for at least 2 days afterwards too!). I must try yoga someday too...but I reckon I'd get kicked out for laughing too loudly at myself (or causing the others to laugh!)
Yoga makes me angry. I don't know why. I don't like meditation. I assume that explains what's wrong with me.
I tried P90X yoga. hated it.
I desperately want to try Zumba. It's the only way I can salsa dance nowadays since my hubby doesn't let me dance with other guys and refuses to dance himself.
I want to be your exercise partner!
Sounds like so much fun reading about it. I can't take that muscle burning thing though...
Wooo oHoooooo! You go Lady Saimi! I love your writing ... and the music, oh I think I worked up a sweat just reading that first paragraph up there! A neighbor gave me her Zumba DVD to try out ... I haven't had the nerve to open it up since (shhh! That was 3 weeks ago). But your post 'almost' has me motivated enough to try! Love it!
Oh, I love your writing-- I could picture you and wanted to laugh along. It just gives me the giggles. I really need to do the same. But I need a girlfriend like you!
That does sound fun, working out with women you know, and have a chance to talk is always more fun. However I NEVER have energy after a workout. Happy for you.
I love Zumba I dont do it anymore but that is so awesome, I can just see you now - work it girl.
You are funny! Good for you and I'd totally be talking and laughing, too.
I want to try Zumba! I know I would love it!
I do Yoga on Tuesdays.. and I'm more worried that I am going to fart.. than fall over.
LOL I love the way you wrote this all up..very fun! I walk about 4 miles everyday and I know what you mean..it really does change the day! ;D
Ok, you have inspired me. I have heard so much about Zumba that I really need to get a dvd or find a class. Hmmmm, I wonder if they have those for the uncoordinated, overweight, over-50, and flat out lazy people? Maybe I should start my own version.
You Go Girl!:)
I would totally take Chatty Yoga with you.... (I used to do Hatha Yoga... but the Chatty version sounds more fun)... but Zumba? Yeah - still under Doctor's orders to avoid that one :(
Wow.. Zumba AND Yoga.. you go girl!!
I totally get the more energy with exercise.. that is a great pay off.
You Rock! I love Zumba wii so far. I finally made it through learning the basic steps.
Go you! I've heard great things about Zumba.
I used to go to the gym all the time when I lived in Utah. But now, we don't live anywhere near a gym and I can't believe how much I miss it!! I miss those burning muscles and yes, socializing.
It is a good thing you aren't enrolled in the military....you could be in serious trouble, "ARE YOU MOCKING ME , ARE YOU,crop and give me 30".......
meant drop and give me 30......not crop
sheeesh
"I'm embarrassed for you!" I can't believe he said that. Sounds like he needs to stretch a bit more and pull something out of his you know what.
Zumba is so fun but yes makes me feel very white
This is so funny. :) I can envision you in this class being the problem student. LOL
I love this..."If you're talking, you're not working." Hahahahahahahaha
Too funny! I LOVE Zumba. Hate yoga. Maybe I need a silly friend with me! LOL
Hahahaha! Way to livin' things up a bit! I'll bet that instructor was tryin' super hard not to laugh along with you!
Wow, you exercise queen! I love yoga, but HATE HATE HATE the boot camp type stuff. As for the talking while exercising, I find that if I say curse words, I can work harder. Or making sarcastic comments helps too. Something about getting that energy out of me in order to be able to expend more physical energy. I don't know. Anyway, I'm amazed you're doing as much as you are. If I did that much cross training, I sure would be a better runner!
