A couple of years ago I had the privilege, cough, cough of baby sitting my sons Betta. He came home to attend a week long fishing trip in Alaska with his dad and brothers and brought along his precious fish Cesar to be under my care while they caught bigger fish to fry.
He gave me all the proper instructions of when to feed, what to feed and how much to feed. He also bought some live food, three little guppies. He had read that Betta's like to hunt for their food, not only does it invigorate them but provides a good source protein.
We decided to give it a shot. He took out the smallest guppy and put it in the Betta's tank. Immediately Cesar went after the fish and the hunt was on. Back and forth, back and forth they swam until Cesar grew tired of playing the cat and mouse game with a little fish who was swimming circles around him. That's right, little guppy fish had no intention of being fresh Sushi for dinner.
My son realized that this idea was stressing out his fish and decided to remove the guppy from Cesar's tank.
The guys left for their trip and I was left with a Betta and three guppy's..... Lucky me.
When the mighty fishermen returned home from the sea, our son went back to college and took his Betta with him, leaving behind a freezer full of fish and..... the three small guppies. Lucky me.
I'm not a fish person unless it's cooked and I had no intention of eating those guppies but I also couldn't flush them down the toilet so, I became the, not so proud owner of three little fish.
I gave them a glass bowl, some rocks, a plant and some food. It's survival of the fittest, as that's about as good as it was going get for them. They didn't seem to mind their new environment nor the cats. You see the cats used their bowl as their personal drinking fountain.
Their school of three lasted for awhile until one bit the dust. A year later another one went belly up leaving behind the soul survivor. The original little guppy that out swam, out lasted, and out witted not just the Betta but the other fish as well.
At first I was ready to rid myself of this fish, be done with the whole thing, but I thought otherwise and decided to keep him. I mean if Jeff Probst was me, he'd be awarding him a million dollars...right.

BTW.. I'm lurving the polka dots.
he's a survivor! i love those ones. i've had many fish die after a couple of weeks but my sister had a goldfish live for years and years. you guys have found that rare fish that has the will to live.
Wow, after a whole year?? amazing!
I had some friends who got beta fish one time... for the sole purpose of watching them fight to the death. That sounds like the act of either a potential serial killer or some very silly teenage boys.
I had a Beta in my office when I worked for DCFS. It was alive for about 2 years, which is a long time for a Beta. My coworkers helped feed it because they accused me of fish neglect. :(
I think it is hilarious that you ended up with the fish that way..!
Fish Tales, Love it!
Well now I know who to send my animals to, when they need some baby sitting... Cute!!!
After attempting the Betta fish I acquired a 55 gallon aquarium and kept a freshwater fish tank. Having sold that, I now have a 75 gallon saltwater aquarium with many of the Finding Nemo Crew. Just for fun, here are a few pictures (copy and paste the link into the browser bar: https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/sredir?uname=emersonparsons&target=ALBUM&id=5597036142577878497&authkey=Gv1sRgCKz5sor4x7D94AE&feat=email
Very funny story, I had no idea Betta swam that much. My daughter had one, left it our son to take care of (she was hoping it would die and no longer need her care). It jumped out of its bowl and fell behind the refrigerator. or it may have been the cat that flung it out.
Very well told! We always had fish and a dog growing up but don't have any pets now and I dont think that is going to change any time soon :)
Amazing tale of fish...I have never had them, they are like plants..I end up killing them too! ;D
I had a Betta fish once upon a time, but did not care for him properly and he was no more.
Nice of you to take care of his fish.
