It's our 13th year of hiking into the husbands bike riding playground.
We call it
The Fathers Day Hike.
The annual hike became a tradition for our family ever since the husband took up
up Mountain biking.
You see, the many trails behind our house lead down into a canyon
which parallels a river.
The further down the trail, the closer you are to the water.
Where's theres water, there's growth.
Each spring one of the trails becomes overgrown with shrubbery,
making it impossible to see where you're riding.
We would gather the boys and our shears and head on out.
Once we made it to the bottom of the trail, they would
start clipping.
They as in, not me. I hike but don't clip.
Although I do take pictures.
It's amazing how much beauty there is in the desert.
I don't know the names of any of these flowers.
Wild seems right...yeah, wild flowers that's what they are.

I even threw in a self portrait just for fun.
Anyway, back to the post.
This year only one of our sons was around for the annual trek.
Anyway, back to the post.
This year only one of our sons was around for the annual trek.
While the husband decided to pack his high powered
hedge trimmer, the faithful son
stuck with tradition and used the clippers.
They were quite please with the outcome and made sure
to test the trails the following morning.
Their ride was a success.
A little side note, I'm guest posting over at: LESA'S should you happen that way. Thank you Lesa!

Thank you for sharing over on my blog!
I would take pictures of flowers, too!:)
Aww - sounds like a special tradition... I would stick with the shooting wildflowers like you do :) Trail clearing is not for the faint of heart in these parts!
Nice to have a tradition. I keep trying to set up new traditions in our family that I think are a good idea, and then I forget all about them! One tradition we do manage to keep, though, is home made cards and gifts on special days. And I try to keep up a tradition of making unusual cakes for birthdays.
There's something very special about watercourses and streams and water holes in deserts. Such a transformation around them.
Cool tradition! I'd be the photographer, too...I'm not very handy with a pair of clippers. :D I went over to Lesa's and read your post there--beautiful story!
I'm sitting here with my wildflower field guide trying to see if I can find out what those flowers are.
The pink one might be Sagebrush Mariposa Tulip. It looks very similar to the one in your photo.
I'm unsure of the yellow flowers.
The blue/purple flowers look like lupine, especially because of the shape of the leaves. The flower spikes though remind me of salvia. In other words, I have no clue.
Ah, it was fun to try though. Hopefully someone familiar with your native wildflowers will come through with answers. Take care.
Yes I would be with you and take pictures too :) Crazy how much growth there is every year
What a great hike! The flowers look gorgeous- makes me want to get out in our 106 degrees today and do some hiking (well, maybe after the sun goes down...).
It's a great tradition and I like that the guys do the clipping and you stick to photography. Nice self portrait of you Siami. It's a good thing that they clip the trail as it would disappear in no time.
Have alovely week.
Hugs,
JB
Okay I am kind of new - do you live out in the desert? And that is a lot of work to clear a trail - but I know they love the tradition. sandie
It must be enjoyable to go hiking with the whole family and a joy to see those beautiful blooms while discovering the place :) Happy weekend!
What a cool tradition. I felt a little sad for you because the other boys weren't there. Time moves on and the kids get older. It's amazing how fast time flies. Do you ride mountain bikes? I had to laugh to because I don't trim either. I could see myself taking pictures why the boys were clipping. :)
Your pictures are lovely--especially the flowers. Nice picture of you, too! I love that you have made this a tradition.
Love traditions. Love random flower pics too. ;0)
Looks like a superb walk, and a lovely family tradition :-)
There's an award for you over at my blog...
That is some serious biking, taking the trimmers!
Looks like fun times.
AND you are so cute.
Your blog is just too nice, keep it up! :) And check this out http://susanna-behindmyeyes.blogspot.fi/2013/06/blogs-to-check-out.html :)
Love the self-portrait!
