Of course there was an art to eating the hunk of chocolate deliciousness.
First you had to carefully peal off the hard chocolate frosting and leave it in a pile on the foil, as to save the best for last. Kinda the dessert after the dessert.
After the cake was devoured, the frosting was next. The wonderful carefully pealed frosting.
Yes that was how to eat a ding dong.
When my dad took over making our lunches, the scrumptious
chocolate dessert was replaced with apples and banana's.
Ever had a banana in a sack lunch? If you had then you would know that everything in the brown paper bag smelled and tasted like a banana.
My lunches were never the same.
As the years moved forward and I got older, so did the Hostess Ding Dong.
I tried one once just to relive a bit of my childhood.
The chocolate frosting coating had a waxy taste and the cake inside seemed dry and unappealing.
It was the last ding dong I ever ate.
When Mod Pizza came to our desert town the husband and I were anxious to give it a go. We decided it was worthy of our circle of restaurants and added it to our Que.
Sitting next to the register on a pedestal plate they have foil wrapped chocolate desserts, much like a Hostess Ding Dong.
I eyeball those every time we're there. I mentioned it to the husband that one of these days I want to try one, but then remember the icky dry taste of a ding dong and quickly changed my mind.
He took his dad to Mod pizza one afternoon and for a birthday treat, he bought him one of those foil desserts.
Apparently he must have tasted it because he later told me they were made of dark chocolate and way too rich for him.
My ears perked up. Dark chocolate? Too rich? He had my full attention as my mouth started to water.
We ate there the other night and unlike my childhood lunches, I saved the dessert for last and bought one after our dinner.
It definitely was everything the husband described.
Oh how I love dark chocolate and the cake inside did not disappoint, rich, moist and creamy.
Each bite melted in my mouth.
The next time my parents are in town it will be my turn to do lunch. We'll go to Mod pizza and after they are finished,
a rich chocolate dessert will be waiting for them.

Yes! I remember those!!!
My mom bought one box every two weeks on payday...
We would try to make them last as long as we could!
Your parents are so adorable!!!
Have a cozy week. : )
Sweet pic of your parents. Oh yes, I remember how a banana would turn even a bologna sandwich into tasting like a banana! So glad you enjoyed the delicious dark chocolate treat again!
We didn't had those type of deserts but we had those famous Joe Louis cake with chocolate frosting and caramel that I used to put in my kids lunches.
I don't think they were good for the brain but the kids loved them.
Since I've been away from sweets, I no longer crave them and stay away from them. They had that waxy chocolate toping as well.
Your parents are very charming.
Hugs, Julia
Putting bananas in a brown paper bag and putting them on top of the icebox would speed ripening them.
Love chocolate!
Sounds yummy..How was the pizza??
I don't remember these but my mother would buy the pink and white covered chocolate cakes in clear packaging. They were rounded and the marshmallow like topping had coconut on it. My brothers and I always wanted the white one. Not positive, but I think they still make them.
Have a good week and thanks for visiting!
I love this! We grew up getting "Little Debbie" snacks in our lunches and I remember them being the best thing EVER, but when I went to introduce them to my kids, I was shocked at how gross they tasted to me now! And my kids didn't even like them either!
Hi Saimi!
Yum!! I remember loving, Ding Dongs, why do they have to change all the good things?!
Dark chocolate is my downfall for sure, can't get enough of it. I think it's wonderful and kind of crazy that they would have such an amazing little snack at a pizza place, but bless them for it!!
Hugs and Love,
Barb
What a delightful post, I love chocolate in any thing, these sounds so delicious!

My tastes are as discriminating as yours... I still love Ding Dongs.
