Keep your friends close and your enemies closer

My sewing room is my own special haven. It used to be the bedroom of our firstborn son but since he no longer resides at home, I gave it a new paint job,  a slight remodel and turned it into my little sanctuary. On an occasion if a wayward visitor should happen upon us, I will share it, it's the least I can do.

I purposely keep all animals out. I don't want cat hair on my fluffy white comforter or dog hair in the carpet, it is deemed a no animal zone. Every so often I might break my own rule an allow my Miniature Schnauzer in to keep me company while I sew, well because I can and because he doesn't shed.

The dogs have their own doggy haven. We gave them the downstairs family room after the boys left. They have access to the backyard and plenty of toys and blankets to keep them comfortable while we're gone. When we're home, they hang out with us.

The only other room they are not allowed in is the laundry room. It's where the kitty litter resides and since the dogs love to eat kitty roca, I use a gate to keep them out.

The cats are a different story. They do as they please and are a tough breed when it comes to reinforcing the rules. They too use the doggy door and it's not uncommon for them to bring us a live present. They have brought in birds to show us what good  hunters they are, except they are still alive when they release them in the house. The birds aren't so hard to catch as the mice are. I hate it when they bring us a mouse and then let it go to scamper off. The cats will look at us like, "Well aren't you going to catch it, we did our part, now you do yours." This has happened on more than one occasion.

Which brings me to share this awful story. I happen to catch a glimpse of a furry brown mouse hiding in my sewing room closet. I quickly called for the husband and told him we have a mouse in the house. He grabbed some traps, smothered them with peanut butter, set them then closed the closet door. The next morning Mr. mouse was caught.

To my surprise I never saw any mice poopies. Everyone knows, where there are mice there are droppings so I just figured he was a new arrival.

I couldn't have been more wrong. Not only is the kitty litter in the laundry room but so is their food. Up on the highest self in the laundry room closet I found the mother load of mice poop and tucked in the corner of the closet is our water heater, where I'm sure Mr. mouse slept, was more droppings.

Unbelievable! Living in direct contact of the cats, no doubt eating out of their bowl, and a house full of dogs a little mouse was at large having the time of his life. I myself was appalled and grossed out. I tore into the closet, cleaned and sanitized.

I hate mice and pride myself on keeping a clean house...How this little mouse got away with coexisting with us for who knows how long I'll never know.

As for the cats, the mighty hunters, what were they doing you ask?

Makes me wonder if they were friend or foe.

I am not a cat fan, but I would at least expect them to help around the house!

Oh nasty! Our house was a new construction when we moved in. We discovered that about 7 mice had decided to move in before we did. We quickly "evicted" them, and haven't had a mouse visitor since. Thank goodness. I can't think of a more unwelcome visitor...well except for a snake. My friend once had a problem with that on her acreage. Creepy.

Look at them napping without a care in the world! You could read this post to them, but I'm sure they're not interested!

Oh this post makes me laugh because I blogged about a very similar experience last month. Ya, I have cats and mouse tracks???? What the heck?

You need to take a picture of your sewing room heaven. I drool over stuff like that.
Ooohhhh and projects too!

Yuckkkkkk!!! I think that cats now days think they are above such disgusting habits as killing rodents. I know ours has yet to bring us any of her 'hunting treasures' and she will soon be 17 years old.

So how many gallons of bleach did you use getting all those droppings out?

Those kitties are loved, well fed and comfy, they could care less about that mouse. :) Sure glad you caught that little critter. I love animals of all kinds but I do not like mice loose in my house. Glad you found the poop stash too. I have read other blogs today about invading mice, guess the cold weather is bringing them inside. Hope you find no more. Hugs

LOL I think the doggie door would have a lock on it! I had a cat once that would bring a mouse, in his mouth, to the sliding glass door and meow very carefully...let me in, look what I've got! ;D

spoiled little kitties, time to step up and do your job.

reminds me of a line from The Family Dog - "we don't expect much of you really... just to eat, and sleep... and occasionally keep the stupid house from getting robbed!"

those cats look they're in cahoots with the mice!

Eek! Looks like they need a bit of motivation, eh?

Catching a mouse in the house is a planned future TST... just because that is ALWAYS an adventure!

Ha, Kitty Roca is an awesome name. I want to buy a boat now just so I can paint that on the stern!! Mice are smart so not so hard to believe they could avoid detection - even by the cats. Geez don't you ever watch Tom and Jerry? W.C.C.

Oh NOOOOOOO!!! I have such Mickey issues. I hate hate hate mice, and I would freak out if I found one in my house. Might be time to have a family meeting with the kitties, and advise them that the outside critters are no longer welcomed! :)

eeeeeeeeeee. yuck. we haven't had mice issues here (knock on wood) but we get the big bugs down here in the south. i'm not sure what's worse.

husband would say that those cats need to do their jobs! ;) he gets on judge for not keeping our yard free of cats.

You are a better woman than I when it comes to cats. I'm definitely not a cat person. (I'm allergic to anything with fur or feathers.) But I'm even more allergic to germy fur or feathers. Mice, ew! You poor dear! I'd've done the same thing you did, cleaning and sanitizing, only I'd've done it while my husband made fun of me. :)

Good luck on the battle, hope those darn kitties do their job in the future!

Ahhh!!!! I'm running away screaming. I once found a dead mouse in our pool trap and I wanted to drain the whole pool and sterilize it.

My dog also brought a dead bird in the house once and left it for me in my unmade bed. SICK!! And of course my husband was out of town so I had to deal with it. I just got the heebie-jeebies again.

The problem is simple, you're feeding your kitties and they are not driven to hunt their prey and...not to mention kitties can be temperamental. LOL. So glad you got that little booger out of your home. I hate those things, too!

First of all.. my cat mittens looks JUST like your black and white one. They could be twins seriously!!!

2nd.. my cats have never brought me a "live" mouse. They are always dead.. and I'm not sure which would sick me out more... as sometimes there are just "parts" left for us.. kinda like they tried to bring us the whole thing.. but just couldn't help themselves.. lol!

I can handle it all.. but the snakes. They are my FEAR.. and they don't want to eat those.. they just bring them to me... alive! EEEEEEEK!

Oh yuck! I'd lend you the huntress we have around here, but then you'd want to keep her. And we can't have that.

Kristina said...

yuck!

btw, mice hate peppermint - so for future mice hunting your cats might do, just pour a small amount of peppermint extract onto an old lid or something and place in areas where you keep your food. It worked for us.

I can't believe that mouse was around that long!!!
CRAZY!
Darn cats.

Oh so sorry! I would freak if there was a mouse in the house. I could handle the crickets when we lived in AZ, but a mouse not so much.

tattytiara said...

Well, I guess you can take it as a sure sign you're feeding your cats enough if nothing else!

Unknown said...

Ha! Yeah, that's the cats' job. You need to give those cats a spanking. Yuck. I hate mice. Why do they always make them so cute? Jerry?? Mickey?? EW.

Oh goodness those pictures are bringing back memories of when our garage was invaded a couple years ago. The poop was everywhere!! They had babies before we knew we had them. Ack!

Those slackers! They'd never make it in today's job market! :)

Glad YOU finally got rid of the varmit!

Thanks for your sweet comment on my blog last week ... :) Boys do stay close longer than girls. At least that's been my experience so far.

Cats are an interesting breed- I wander if they made a deal behind closed doors. You'll have to have a serious talk with them!
