A stranger in the night

Ever since I can remember we were taught never to talk to strangers. Not only could we not talk to them, but we were never to take candy from them, EVER!

It's what I grew up with so it's what my boys learned from an early age as well. Strangers were people who like to steal little children by luring them away with candy and cute puppies. Once in their clutches they would sell them to child labor camps.

My boys didn't see what the big deal was. The work couldn't be any worse than at home and better yet, these guys had candy.

We are a family that celebrates Halloween. We carve pumpkins, dress up and yes even take candy from strangers. I'd take the boys trick or treating in wind, rain, sleet or snow. It didn't matter the weather, we would bundle up just to rake in the goodies until they were begging me to take them home. "We're tired, my feet hurt, can we go home now?" But until every last bell was rung, we'd finished out the night.

I don't have any children to trick or treat with anymore, even worse our house is off the beaten path so nobody dares to come down the dark col de sac. I'd bribe my friends with young children and promise them the best treats if they would come by. Even at that it was a small handful ghosts and ghouls who would humor a desperate old lady.

Last year Halloween fell on a Sunday so I knew my church friends wouldn't be coming around with their children. It fell into the category of honoring the Sabbath. I thought Halloween was exempt, heck it's the only day we get to talk to strangers and take candy from them so why couldn't we trick or treat on a Sunday as well.

 It's HALLOWEEN people!

Regardless I had all this candy and no children so on our way home from Granny's Sunday dinner I had my husband drive via a neighborhood. This neighborhood was swarming with princesses, power rangers, batmen, robots, witches, you name it, they were there.

I was in my glory.  I figured if the kids weren't going to come to my house, I had to go to them.

I rolled the window down and started handing out candy. Hey kids, I would shout, want some candy? They gave me a strange look, but would still come to the window and take it. We kept driving around and passing out candy until the treats were gone.

Once I got my Halloween fix, I realized I was the very person I told my kids to stay away from. I was a stranger passing out candy, I had cute puppies and....I once owned and operated a Child Labor camp.

Fun post! I always went trick-or-treating as a child! We lived in a safe community (I thought), and we weren't scared of anyone or anything! We would stay out until midnight, taking candy from strangers and some pretty funky people... :0)

No one comes to my house either - although I always buy candy for them! I think it's kind of sad that our world has changed so much, that kids have to be afraid of adults . . . and that there are adults that kids have to be afraid of! Hope you get a few spooks this year!

Hugs,
Barb

LOL - but I love this story!!! What a great way to spend Halloween. Maybe me and hubby will do the same thing, once the little people in our life are too old to go trick-or-treating with their Auntie and Uncle!

Lol! Good thing it's on Monday this year. My parents never get trick-or-treaters at their house anymore- as it is the older street with no street lights. We used to cut across the cornfield to make it to the next subdivision to continue our trick- or- treating growing up.

Ok you got away with it once but don't try that out of a back of a van or the parents will come after you with pitchforks!! Nice memories - Thanks! W.C.C.

That is funny.
I think that is a fabulous idea.
I bet you weren't a scary looking stranger anywayz.
BUT you totally missed an opportunity to have some extra children at the labor camp.

Maybe we will swing on by your place if you have the good candy. Have to say Arlee didn't mind the candy you gave her on Saturday. :)

We live in the woods and haven't had one trick or treater yet. (10 years) If they had come last night, all we could offer would have been some sugar-free chocolates. Now wouldn't that have gone over well.

that was funny. We get no trick or treaters either, as we are a little too far out in the country, and it's a 1/4 mile walk down our road to our house...no lights.
I sure miss Halloween with the kids. Last year we wanted to "DO" something, so we took a drive to find little ghosts and goblins (and hubby got a speeding ticket)
we stayed home

and I have seen CSI show about crazy ladies handing out candy from the car window (tee, hee)

Ha! The image of you shouting from a car with candy in your hand makes me laugh. I'm not sure I would let my kids take candy from someone doing that, but you look like such a nice person, I'm sure I would let them. It is ironic, isn't it?

Haha i was laughing soo hard! i can really see you driving around in a car passing out candy!!!

I have been here 6 years now, but i still do not get the "Halloween" thing..... Maybe because it is because we live out in the boonies! ha!

Big hugs and so glad to be back here

Now that was a fun read. I only went trick-or-treating once when I was young...mom didn't want us out and about. We took the foster children and all of our children every year though and we had so much fun. Glad you got your Halloween fix. We don't have any come to our place either but don't think I will go looking for any. :) Thanks for the sweet comment on my post. Hugs

Bwahahahahaha! I love that you took the candy to the kids since they weren't coming to you. We never get trick or treaters. I'm not sure just how many actually go door to door around here since the town hands out candy for hours.

I think it is funny that you drove somewhere to hand out candy. I hardly think of you as an old lady, but the kids probably did:) To them anyone over 18 seems ancient.

Oh, that is a stranger story with candy. I got a chuckle from your post-- you have a great sense of humor and a good love for traditions that involve candy!
