While the men folk were away, the girls got together and played

My brothers took Labor Day weekend to do just that, labor.

My oldest brother Sam and his wife have a cabin up in the mountains of Idaho.
His mission should my dad and younger brother cho0se to accept it, was clearing dead trees that pose as a fire hazard.

Not only did my 87 year old father choose to help, but my younger brother and his friend decided to join the recruiting party as well.

They loaded their gear in Sam's plane and took off leaving their wives behind.
Seriously, my dads suitcase.
My brother wasted no time in putting his crew to work.

And for reasons I'll never understand, my sister in law decided to stop in on her way taking their son to college.
She never left and ended up being the guys camp cook.
She's a rugged woman so I'm sure this work weekend was right up her ally.

My husband and son had their own agenda and headed to Park City Utah for another brutal mountain bike race that consisted of 75 miles of Utah's ski trails.

The husband isn't that crazy, but our son is. The husband went along to make sure his boy survived or at least to be there in case he didn't.

I'm happy to report not only did he survive but he placed 32nd out of 400 riders.

My mom and I on the other hand, decided us girls needed to hang together so she drove, by herself, over the other side of the WA mountains to my house braving directions from a cell phone GPS while looking out for traffic.

I'm so proud of her.

She arrived Thursday and on Friday we took off for Vancouver where my youngest son lives.

He was a lone man for a couple of days by choice as he wanted to participate in the Hero Up race in OR on Saturday.

Hero up is a fundraiser which consists of a 10K, 5K and a children's run. It's called Hero Up for the children who have fought and lost the battle to cancer or are still fighting.

Our good friends lost a child at the age of 4 to brain cancer 6 years ago and ever since have organized the Hero Up Race.
They are an incredible family who demonstrated love, faith and strength during a time where one could easily fall apart.

They are such an inspiration and I certainly didn't want to miss out on the action so since my mom was willing, we left my house in the rear view mirror and drove off.

Of course, she was so excited to see her grandson
and listen to him play the piano. It's always a treat to hear him play.

The next day was the race.

The Bat boys George and Banjo ran the 5K with a friend

while my mom and I walked the three miles.
Why be in a hurry when there are pictures to take....right?

After the race us girls headed back to my place and George caught up with his wife and her family to finish off the weekend in Bend OR.

Monday, the guys flew in and delivered my dad.

After a weekend of hard work I thought he might appreciate a yummy treat.
Tuesday morning came and the parents headed home. They had a long drive ahead of them and wanted to get off to an early start.

I'm so thankful for my parents health which allows them the freedom to participate in all the activities we throw their way.

Sounds like a wonderful weekend at the cabin. Great to have a good family. LOVE your dad's suitcase - I still have one like that, but only use it for storage these days! But I can't part with it. Have a wonderful week, and thanks so much for visiting my blog, hugs, Valerie

Hello, Saimi -- first, thank you for coming to visit me at Marmelade Gypsy and for your very nice comment. It sounds like you were terribly busy over the holiday, but busy in that good kind of productive, family way that makes it all worthwhile. Loved your dad's suitcase, too. My guy was cycling 400 miles in Michigan over the holiday -- I'm always relieved to see him at the end! Glad you had good results and good times!

Hi Saimi--so glad to see you stopped in! That Hero-Up event looks amazing, so glad to see pictures of it and love those pictures of y'all with you SIGNS....so cute! That bike race looks hard, hard, hard. My husband used to participate in those yearly back when we were young. LOL glad you liked the picture of the moon and yes, it IS INCREDIBLY hot and humid here all summer but you acclimate to it or you are born here and are born used to it!! ha ha LOL But when winter rolls around and we never see snow or ice or freezing or anything like that, we are very thankful we live here. Our winters are very mild and flowers bloom all winter. And it never gets brown, really, the trees and grasses. Yes, you remember correctly--the bugs are big. I hate that part! ha ha The "skeeters" (mosquitoes) are know as "air jaws", LOL They are quite agressive as are the "no-see-ums", do y'all have those there? I've never been to your part of the country but it sure looks beautiful!! Do you have cold winters? Do your summers not get hot? I've heard many there don't even have air conditioning?? It is a must here. The heat is brutal. I'm kinda ready for Fall, also kinda hanging onto summer! Right now Hurricane Florence is bearing down on us, so we must begin our preparations. Oh....and I LOVE YOUR DAD'S SUITCASE.....SO FUN!!--so full of character, I love the picture! Banged up old suitcases tell so many stories, I like those much better than anything new.
