Saw my neighbor, who noticed my hair is shorter than usual. He said, "Your hair is shorter."
I laughed and said, "Yeah it just keeps getting shorter and shorter."
He jokingly teased, "Must be an age thing."
That's when I punched him in the arm.
Although our little conversation brought me to another one I had with someone. We were on the topic of hair and he mentioned that at some point a girl just has to let it go, as in after a certain point (or age) long hair doesn't do it for 'mature' woman. I say mature in replace of 'older', sounds a bit more..... refined.
My decision to have short hair has nothing to do with my age, as a matter of fact I like to change things up, not have the same style. I'll grow it out, then cut it off, grow it out once again and again, cut it off. Whatever the mood I'm in at the time of my appointment is how my hair will end up.
This whole age thing and hair bothers me so I asked a few stars what they think. I picked the ones that are in the same age category such as myself.
First up was Demi Moore
Me: "Demi your a woman of mature age why do choose to have long hair?"
Demi: "Well, being married to a much younger man, one who could actually be my son I have to keep myself as youthful looking as possible. Long hair, face reconstruction, breast implants. I'm actually due for another surgery."
She has a point, maybe she wasn't the right person to interview.
Next was Nicole Kidman:
Me: "Nicole, I see you are keeping your hair long, aren't you a woman of mature age? Like, whats the deal?"
Nicole: "Me? Really, being forty something is considered old? I had my first child at age 40 and look at me do I look old to you? I'm at the top of my game, I'm married to a super star country singer, I'm one of the best paid actresses in Hollywood and I'm working on my second child." Seriously Saimi get real."
Ouch, I think I offended her.
Then there was Julia Roberts:
Me: "Julia you have such long beautiful hair, but isn't time to let it go, after all you are of that 'age'?"
Julia: "Saimi, I'm the biggest female movie star of all time. After birthing twins I had my third child at the age of 40, I don't use deodorant and my films gross more than 2 million at the box office. Is that all you want to talk about is my hair?"
Ok, moving on to Courteney Cox
Me: Courteney I noticed you are still keeping your hair long, I mean you are getting up there don't you think it's time to go short?"
Courteney: "Look I'm doing the best I can. Even though I'm struggling with growing old, I want to do it naturally." Then she started to cry and confessed she doesn't do botox anymore and said she tries not to have too many mirrors around.
I think I hit a nerve. I handed her a tissue and left.
Next in line was Sarah Jessica Parker:
Me: "Sarah look at you, you're in your 40's now, don't you think it's time to let go of your long locks?"
Sarah: "Not a chance! What does age have to do with it? MJ likes to run his fingers through my hair, especially when we have sex in the city."
There you have it. 5 top successful stars in their 40's still sporting long hair. Gee, do you think age matters?

I think age has nothing to do with hair length. In fact, my 10 year old daughter currently has shorter hair than her old mom. I think your idea of changing it whenever the mood hits ya is right on target! ;)
Happy New Year!
It's funny, how often do you see a woman over the age of 60 with long hair? If you stop and think about it, not often. I do think age factors in, but NOT at age 40 or even 50. I think women tend to go shorter and shorter because they choose a cut and freeze style that they have to do little to keep up.
I do the same as you Saimi. Long, short, medium, and so on. It really depends on the time of year and indeed my mood. Right now it is mid length, but come spring it may be way short again. My hub's recently told me he likes it longer, and my kids say I look younger with it longer.. hmmm.. makes ya think.
You are too funny! My hair is just above my shoulders and that's just where I like it at ANY age.
LOL that was good! And I don't think age matters, I have seen gorgeous women with shoulder length gray hair and they looked so nice. I say, do what you like! :D
i'm always growing it out and chopping it off. this time it might be long for a while, though, because husband expressed an appreciation for my long hair. i think you have the bone structure to pull off long or short, no matter the age. you can do whatever you want!
I'm 30 and tend to keep my hair short, not because of my age - but because I hate to style it and usually keep it pulled back into a bad hair day ponytail. I just got it cut last week and before that my last haircut was in August.
Great post. Love the 'interviews' with these everyday ordinary women.
I honestly think that more mature women (60 and over) go shorter with their hair because they just don't feel the need to impress anyone and have long given up the fighting age battle. It then becomes more important to be comfortable than ever so stylish. (I think thats when the purple feathered hats come out too.) See what we have to look forward to?
LOL! I have totally had this conversation with my mother a million times!
She's told me since I was a wee girl, boys like girls with longer hair. I kid you not.
I think she was devastated to hear that Mr. Daddy likes my hair short.
I personally loved seeing little old ladies in our nursing home ministry - with their tiny buns ... something absolutely sweet about the care they took! (I'm referring of course, to the buns ATOP THEIR HEADS... in case you were wondering).
I love your celeb interviews... nicely played!
And ahem... pictures?!?!
I would've smacked him in the arm too!
And I want to see pics of your hair as well.
OMGoddness! Sweetie -- I almost pee'd in my pants from reading this one (must be an age thing, too, huh?) KIDDING! But really ... this post made me laugh out loud! You are one funny funny lady.
I hear you on the hair thing. What made me laugh, too, was that this week my neighbor (who is turning 40) told me she wants to have extensions put in so she can have long hair. Now, I have to tell you - we are not in a Beverly Hills area - we are a suburb of Chicago (not even near the city). Extensions? Seriously? I'd love YOU to ask her why!!! ;)
HAPPY NEW YEAR to you, my dear friend!
Saimi, You crack me up!!! When you have to teach you should do it as if you were blogging, I bet you would be much more comfortable and by golly your great at it. Happy New Year!!!!
That was fun! You are like me. I go short, a little longer, short, longer..what ever I feel like when I go to get my hair cut.
And I like the word 'mature.'
Hey, I hope you have a Happy New Year!
Oh wow - what a funny, funny, post, but truly, a topic for good discussion: long or short hair, does age play a factor? I've always had short hair but have always wanted long hair. I just can't do the growing out thing. In any event, I think a woman should do whatever she well pleases! Happy New Year!
ha! That's funny. I cut my hair off recently too. Not because I am 44, but like you, I get bored! My sweet husband has learned to roll with the punches or the scissors, so to speak!
ha ha...that was cute. Let's see....why do I have long'ish hair....cause I am lazy sometimes and need to throw it back in a pontytail
and also I like to "whip it around" when I feel sassy......
so there you have it.
wear it how ya want it
Hi Saimi,, my name is Karen from
http://glassofsweettea.blogspot.com/
I come to you via my blogging buddie, Julie.
I am 47 and if you stop by my blog you will see that I too have long hair... not real long but just below my shoulders..I remember when I turned 30, and a thought entered my mind.. "OH man , now I have to go cute my hair short" lol, but I didnt follow my moment of weakness..
I think a cute style is more important than the length.. But I refuse to let the OLD LADIE MOVE IN lol..
Well just wanted to stop by and introduce myself and say Hi. hope you will get a chance to stop by and visit me some time soon..
God Bless...
Hmmm, how come you didn't 'interview' your 50 year old sister with her long locks? Ha, ha! Very cute!
Short hair is sooooo in, everyone has the cutest short cuts. If my face didn't look like a swollen balloon with short hair, i'd be right there with ya...
Love the interviews with the celebs. Lucky you for landing such a terrific gig!
However, I agree with the celebs. I don't think it has to do with age, I think it has to do with what your face shape can handle.
I'm in my 40s and have long hair, and quite frankly, it makes me feel younger (and it's easier to style!)
If you like short, go short. If not, screw what other people say or thing, right?
Hahaha! Great post, Saimi and one that really struck a chord with me....as I fast approach my 40s, I keep thinking I better cut my shoulder length hair as I worry it will look like I'm clinging to my youth. But, as others have said, hair length should have nothing to do with age and more with what suits your face...be it short or long!
Haha, nice! I just think a lot of people have such cute hair styles when they cut it short! Me? I just don't want the upkeep have having to keep cutting it to maintain style. I suppose that's why I've never had it super short.
(P.S. Weirdest thing. I've stopped by your blog several times since you changed it up but for some reason I never saw a way to post a comment until now. Weird!)
Is it as short as mine? Whenever I see someone w/short hair who may or may not bat for the other team, I blame my husband.
He is why I have short hair. I think it was because he has 6 sister who all had long hair and he was in charge of cleaning the drains. Or he is just a neck man.
I really would have smacked him too. You posed a great question. It's kind of like we are not supposed to wear bathing suits that don't have skirts! I turned the big "40" this year and I am bound and determined to get into a bikini this summer;(I have a long way to go). I just want to "rock it" one last time!
btw - Thanks for your compliments on my blog. I would love to help you out. Graphics/effects are easy!
Very funny post! I loved the interviews, great job. But, honestly, age does play a role in many women's decissions to lop off their locks. I think it's partly due to hormone changes which can affect the luster and health of some ladies' hair. I've had short hair since my early teens. Short hair simply suits my appearance best. I'm in that 40-something crowd, looking cute and sassy with my short hairdo. =D
Hha! My hubs and I have this discussion every week, I'm cutting mine short at 59 :)
I'm totally with ya on the the type of cut depends on your mood that day! I think you look good with long hair and I'm so jealous you got to talk with Julia Roberts!
