Happy Gilmore

It's been debated that the game of golf was once a gentleman's game and the name GOLF meant Gentleman Only, Ladies Forbidden. Well try as they may, that's just an old husband's tale and it actually derived from Scotland during the medieval era. What once started out 'Gowf' has now evolved into 'Golf.'

Lucky for me because I've been know to dabble a time or two on the old golf course and actually like the challenge of trying to hit the ball. I got that chance last weekend when I spent time with some old classmates during our 30 year high school reunion.

About 20 of us divided into five teams and played a low key game of scramble. Scramble is where everybody tees off and whoever drives closest to the hole we shoot from that spot the second time and so on from there.

I was the only girl on a team of three guys, who are all very good golfers. My intentions for playing was to be where the action was and to get the most out of the day. I chose wisely. There was plenty of action and tons of fun over the course of our 5 hour golf game. I even learned more than I really wanted to know about a few under the table rules when playing with genders of the opposite sex. Something about proving their manhood if their drive doesn't make it past the woman's tee box. Yeah, I won't go into details and thankfully everyone spared me from having to witness the consequence of a short drive.

With the first half of the game under our belts the guys decided we should all try our hand at doing a "Happy Gilmore shot" just for fun of course. Adam Sandler played Happy Gilmore in a silly movie about golf. Gilmore's technique for hitting a ball was more like that of a hockey player. With the ball sitting on the tee, Gilmore would run at full speed and whack it. A very unique style indeed and not at all kosher to the traditional way golf should be played.

Here's me attempting a "Happy Gilmore"
What do you think, did I do Gilmore proud? Just for the record, it was one of my best drives of the day!

I can't do anything that requires coordination of more than two body parts at one time. I flunked miserably at miniature golf and have never even attempted the big league. I did find I was freakishly good at shuffleboard. Purely accidental. Can't wait to try lawn bowling. :)

will you think less of me when I say that I'm perfectly happy with the "gentlemen only, ladies forbidden" description - at least in my household... ManOfTheHouse only plays when his brother comes to town (twice a year) and when a game is five hours long that's enough!

okay - and like Krista I cannot to ANYTHING that requires coordination - even my kids won't play catch with me (after suffering a minor concussion or two)

I wish I was kidding.

BUT - you done Gilmore proud girl!!

You absolutely rock!
I think you might be right about the Gentlemen Only, Ladies Forbidden.
It looks like you had a good time.
You are certainly NOT old enough to have had a 30 year class reunion!

Awesome shot! My husband golfs a lot, but I rarely join him because I don't have the patience. Though when I do, I like the Gilmore shot, too--it's not any worse than my usual shot and it's a lot more fun!

yep, looks a bit gilmore-like, but if you got the shot, it was worth the look. I have often thought of golfing, since I did take lessons when I was young. My dad wanted me to be a golf pro, but I never continued, and he must have given up on me. I know how to use the irons, though. But my clubs are 40 yrs old! I recently threw them out.
