It's a Sell of a good job

Mom, looks like you guys could use some pest control. I see signs of ants in the walk and driveway and look at these spider webs, oh and under the eves are bee hives.

I know, I know we need to spray.

The trained eye of a pest control salesman didn't miss a single insect dwelling around our home. Our son has been selling pest control contracts for the last four years.

It started while he was in college. Some recruiters for a pest control business were looking for eager students to train and turn loose in neighborhoods selling their service.

When he first approached us about it I kept my skeptical thoughts to myself. "Are you crazy, just come home and work."

Instead, I smiled as he explained all about it. It also made me feel better about this new endeavor when he said his good friend would be selling with him.

I like the buddy system especially knowing someone familiar  would be his travel partner.

Fast forward four years and my son is now married and a college graduate with a degree in Health Care Administration. It's a good start and with an added Masters I'm confident he can land a great job.

He's confident he has landed a great job. He has seen what a successful salesman can earn. It's a make it or break it kinda of a business and he is on the 'make it' end of the scale.

Now a seasoned salesman he knows, 'working for the man' as he clearly puts it, is not what he wants to do. He has found his path in life with some ideas for later on down the road.

I am completely sold and no longer a skeptic. I'm proud of his hard work and listening to his stories of people he comes across is really something else.

Here's one of his latest.

Knocking on a door, a little three year old answers.

"My parents aren't home."

Undeterred my son says, " Ok, now would you please go get them."

A man comes to the door and my son introduces himself and begins telling him why he's there.

The man, using choice words and lots of profanity, tells him he's not interested in what he's selling.

My son is unfazed by the man and calmly continues explaining his product.

The man, using his foul mouth tells my son, "Man you are a blankety, blank good salesman, you aren't going to quit are you?"

My son just keeps on a talking. The man asked him if he believes in what he was selling and my son replied yes.

So the guy takes out a hundred dollar bill and tries to hand it to my son.

Refusing his offer, my son tells him they don't accept cash.

The guy says, its not for your #*** product, I don't believe that stuff works, it for you! You are a blankety blank good sales man and hands the money to my son.

Out of all his crazy stories, I have to say, that one takes the cake.

I'd say, that story, is one of instant applause, for a job well done!!!!! ,-)

My husband was his own boss, for wayyyyy long years. Running a corner drug store. He could not work for anyone else, either. Of course, when you work for yourself, you have the freedom of all the decisions, and also the burden, of all the decisions.

Plus, you have to provide for your own retirement. But he wouldn't have had it, any other way.

Best of everything, to your son!!!!!!!

Gentle hugs,
Tessa
