After five days of being captive in my home coughing, nursing a burning throat and unable to sleep, I decided to see the family physician. I called first thing this morning, went straight through to the triage and told them my concerns that I could possibly have strep throat. It feels that bad.
The gal I was talking with looked up my information on the computer and for some odd reason it wasn't coming up. I went over it again and she continued to search. It's really weird since the doctor I was planning on seeing, is in fact our family physician.
She asked me when was the last time I was in the clinic and I couldn't remember, but my missing information should have told her that. She was really nice and said it's not uncommon for them to drop patients if they haven't been in in three years. I was in shock and a little taken a back, "You mean, I have to be sick and come in on a regular basis in order for you to keep my records?"
It's not that I've had a clean bill of health for the last three years or anything, we've just been fortunate enough to have friends in the medical field that help us out. For some reason, today I decided to see our family doctor, only to find out their loyalty goes so far. Three years to be exact.
It really wasn't a problem for them to re enter my information and I was seen within the hour. The whole appointment was zip, zip and I was in and out quickly. The test came back negative for strep, which means no antibiotic and a longer recovery period.
Actually, I should consider myself lucky this is my first cold of the season. Usually when we enter the preschool room in the fall, it's just a matter of time before those little germs seep into our system. But this year I was out for three months with a leg injury and was certain, as soon as I was back in class I would catch the first thing that came down the pike. While everyone else was dropping like flies, I was holding steady. It was so obvious I was the only one not getting sick that I was accused of being the 'host'. The host, yeah, that's a funny one.
Even the husband was catching the bug. I told him what everyone was saying to me about being the carrier and he said maybe my system is so full of antibiotics (and I was on plenty) that I couldn't catch anything if I tried.
If that's the case, I was lucky to dodge five months of the cold and flu season. So I guess I don't have much to complain about. Just need to remember to share the love with my family doctor more often.
